Unsigned artists can put their music on Last.fm and be paid directly for every song played (for free full-length tracks every time someone streams a song i.e. it is based on how popular a song is with their fans, instead of a fixed amount. If you make music, you can sign up to participate for free.
Last.fm is paying artists and labels a share of advertising revenue from the website. Maybe, this new business model will be the solution for the music industry for making money against the pirates!
